   Proposal Description:
   Dementia of the Alzheimer's type (DAT) is very often found to be comorbid with mixed underlying pathologies, the most common of which are of a vascular nature. However, the vascular features which may contribute to cognitive impairment in DAT are diverse, and this syndrome is thus highly heterogeneous in terms of underlying pathology. A better understanding of the in vivo cognitive and imaging features associated with different vascular pathologies in mixed DAT would increase accuracy in estimating the most probable etiology of the disease. The aim of this study is to describe the neuropsychological and imaging characteristics associated with a variety of autopsy-verified vascular pathological features in patients with mild cognitive impairment and dementia whose primary suspected etiology in life was Alzheimer's disease. Results from this study will elucidate the phenotypical characteristics associated with different vascular pathologies and may contribute to more accurate diagnosis in vivo.
